Large Animal Ambulatory Services
Although Pilchuck serves as a leading equine referral center, we also take pride in providing exceptional primary care on a field service basis for the horses of Puget Sound. Our ambulatory practitioners are based on the hospital facility and work closely with our board-certified clinicians to provide patients with exceptional care.
Our ambulatory veterinarians have direct access to in-hospital equipment and resources, including an on-site pharmacy and state-of-the-art laboratory. Pilchuck’s ambulatory vehicles are fully equipped to handle routine and emergency veterinary care, allowing us to bring the expertise of our veterinary staff directly to farms and ranches.
Wellness and Preventive Care
Pilchuck’s ambulatory department offers comprehensive wellness and preventive care, including routine vaccinations, fecal tests/deworming, and nutritional assessment/hay analysis. Knowledge is the most important tool you have to make informed decisions about what’s best for your animal. Our field service veterinarians work with you, whether your animal is an accomplished athlete or longtime companion, to provide individualized care.
Mobile Diagnostic Imaging & Lameness Exams
You might be concerned about a subtle change of gait or a swollen hock. In either case, a thorough examination by a skilled veterinarian, possibly using advanced imaging tools, may be necessary to make an accurate diagnosis.
Our expertise and judgment, backed by the latest in portable diagnostic and therapeutic tools, allow us to develop a treatment plan that helps you achieve your goals.
- High-resolution ultrasound
- Digital radiography
- Shockwave therapy
- Regenerative medicine
- Lameness exams
- Pre-purchase evaluations
If you are considering breeding your horse, you may be surprised by all the options. Since 1996, the Equine Reproduction Center at Pilchuck has provided a wide range of routine and advanced mare and stallion services, including consultation to help you decide which strategy best fits your needs:
- Mares: estrus cycle management, artificial insemination, breeding soundness exams, pregnancy diagnosis and embryo transfer
- Stallions: training to the phantom for semen collection, breeding soundness exams, and semen evaluation for shipping or freezing
Horses have a dental arrangement unique to their species that requires regular maintenance and care. Preventive dental care, including periodic exams, helps identify potential problems that can lead to tooth loss. Whether pulling a youngster’s wolf teeth or performing bite correction in a senior who is having trouble chewing, routine tooth and gum care allow your horse greater comfort and longevity.
Frequently observed conditions that indicate your horse may need a dental checkup include weight loss or trouble chewing/dropping feed. More subtle indications might be head-shaking, lameness or unusual aggressive behavior. Pilchuck veterinarians perform routine floating, extractions, dental radiographs and select advanced procedures.
Because we are dedicated to finding the best treatment for our patients, we offer alternative therapies that have demonstrated their value when used alone or in combination with conventional veterinary medicine.
Our integrative medicine doctors and staff have extensive training and experience in chiropractic manipulation, acupuncture and Chinese herbal therapy. Integrative medicine offers excellent options for equine athletes, for treating chronic conditions and for geriatric care.
